We Are Here!
Tom and I arrived safely, but tired in Barbados. The Hilton, where we're staying, is only two years old and beautiful. It's built right next to an old fort that they light up at night.
Our cab ride from the airport was very interesting. Our driver was 81 years old and has lived here his entire life. He just celebrated his 53rd wedding anniversary. He told us many things: that he had 4 children, 20 grandchildren (admitting that he didn't know all of their names!) and 5 grandchildren. Sadly, only one of his grandchildren lives here. One lives in Ft. Lauderdale and the rest are all in England. He told us that the last time Barbados was hit directly by a hurricane was back in 1955. He was about 25 years old and most of the people sought out shelter in the local churches. Eleven people were killed in one church when it collapsed. He also told us that many people were washed out to sea, since the island is only 300 feet above sea level, there wasn't any place to safely ride out the storm. Isn't that sad? I pray that there will be no more storms forming while we're here.
The water is clear blue, but the skies so far are cloudy. It's been raining off and on since we arrived. Tom is working today, and I'm working on writing and answering e-mails. I'll see if I can't post up some pictures. Until then you might enjoy checking out the link below. Our hotel is located right on that point. You can zoom in to see it more closely. Our room is facing the pool.
