Keeping with the theme of this blog, I decided to do a blog search and see who else is posting about Grandparenting. I was thrilled to find this one that offered a post about a cute sign that was posted in a friend's kitchen.
The issue is about how many grandparents see it as their job to "spoil" their grandchildren. This mentality goes against everything that the Bible instructs us to do in raising the next generation. Webster's 1828 Dictionary defines it - to corrupt; to vitiate; to mar. I have never heard the word vitiate before - it means to injure the substance or qualities of a thing, so as to impair or spoil its use and value. Thus we say, evil examples vitiate the morals of youth.
I am a brand new Nana, and my desire is to learn from those who have gone before me in setting an example of what godly grandparenting looks like. I have watched my children's grandparents (A HUGE thank you to my parents and Tom's parents!) do excellent jobs in coming alongside us as parents in training our children. I have watched older friends grandparent in a godly way. All these inspire me on how to begin my own journey as Nana of Bristol and Norah. Only God knows how many little grandchildren I'll be blessed with. Right now I have two - and one just happens to be sleeping in my living room as I'm typing. I pray that God will help me learn to lead my grandchildren well - not spoiling them by giving into their every desire. As He faithfully led me through the parenting years, I'm confident that He will lead me through the Grandparenting years as well.
"One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts."
Psalm 145:4 ESV
