Counting The Days Until...

It's cold outside. Whenever the temperature drops I crave my grandmother's chili. Her's isn't just any chili, in my opinion it's the best I've ever had.

When Tom and I were engaged back in the fall of 1978 I was packing to go visit him for the weekend in Bradenton, FL. Big Mama lived with us, and when she heard that I was going she got busy in the kitchen. I had no idea how much Tom had captured her affection until I was about ready to leave. She handed me a quart-sized jar of chili to give to Tom just because she overheard him say that he loved hot-spicy chili. How sweet that she wanted to bless him in such a special way.

When I handed Tom the jar of homemade chili, he was touched by her gift! To this day, whenever I make Big Mama's chili we fondly remember my grandmother and her desire to give something to Tom that would make him happy.

So, I bet you're mouth is watering to try this delicious, time-tested recipe. Unfortunately, Blogs haven't figured out how to give out samples, so you'll have to try making it yourself. And let me know if you agree that this is the best chili ever! Big Mama grew up in Oklahoma, which accounts for her great recipe!

Big Mama's Chili

1 lb. round steak, cubed small like dice (Publix will cut the meat for you if you ask)
1 can chili beans
1 can kidney beans
1 can stewed tomatoes
1 onion, chopped
1 t. marjoram
3 t. paprika
1 t. cumin
Salt to taste
3 T. chili powder

Combine all ingredients either in pot on stove and simmer 2 hours. Or, I put mine in the crockpot and let cook all day. If you like your chili really hot, try chopping a jalepeno and adding it to the pot. Enjoy!

Yes, I must admit it is the BEST of all and now I think Seth would call it his favorite too! I always want it as soon as it starts feeling the slightest bit cold outside! YUM-O!

Big Mama would be pleased to know that another in-law is happy to enjoy her scrumptious chili. There will be a day when we can all feast on this together!
